Motion for a European Parliament resolution on road safety in the European Union
The European Parliament,
– having regard to Article 91 of the TFEU,
– having regard to the White Paper on Transport adopted by the European Commission,
– having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,
A. whereas road transport is the main method of transport and the main cause of accidents;
B. whereas road accidents are one of the leading causes of death for young people between the ages of 15 and 25;
C. whereas according to the mid-term evaluation of the 2011-2020 strategic framework for road safety, even though the number of road deaths in Europe decreased by 18.4% between 2010 and 2014, in 2014 alone there were some 25 700 deaths caused by road accidents, namely about 51 deaths per million inhabitants;
D. whereas, according to the above-mentioned document, for each death on the road there are still 8-9 people who are seriously injured, despite the fact that the number of those seriously injured in road accidents in Europe went down by around 13% between 2010 and 2014;
E. whereas zero road transport fatalities by 2050 is one of the goals of the European Union;
F. whereas in order to move closer to fulfilling that goal we have to halve the number of road fatalities by 2020;
1. Calls on the Commission to urge Member States to step up their action with regard to road safety, in order to help the Union achieve its goals by 2050.
