B8-1056/2015

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on the vaccination system in jeopardy

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas the latest figures from the Italian Ministry of Health confirm that ever fewer children are being vaccinated and that in 2014 the vaccination rate for children up to the age of two against polio, tetanus, diphtheria, hepatitis B and pertussis (whooping-cough) was 94.6%;

B.  whereas the Istituto Superiore de Sanità (Italian Institute of Health) agrees that the downward trend for vaccinations appears to be getting stronger;

C.  whereas the reduction in the number of children being vaccinated is alarming the scientific world as viruses and bacteria that were no longer causing concern could strike again;

1.  Calls on the Commission, given its responsibilities in relation to public health and medicine and pursuant to Article 168 TFEU, carefully to monitor vaccination data from the various institutions concerned, in order to prevent the resurgence of diseases which were believed to have been eradicated.
