MOTION FOR A RESOLUTION on the abolition of the European Semester for economic policy coordination

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on the abolition of the European Semester for economic policy coordination

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to its resolution of 1 December 2011 on the European Semester for Economic Policy Coordination,

–  having regard to its resolution of 24 June 2015 on the review of the economic governance framework: stocktaking and challenges,

–  having regard to the report of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs and the opinions of the Committee on Budgets, the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs, the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection, the Committee on Regional Development, the Committee on Constitutional Affairs and the Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas the European Semester is an instrument which is renewed every six months to give Member States 'country-specific recommendations';

B.  whereas the general state of the Union remains weak and fragile, despite a very modest recovery;

C.   whereas the effectiveness of this European Semester is increasingly frequently being questioned;

1.  Calls on the Commission to abolish the European Semester;

2.  Calls on the Commission to return enough power to Member States to enable them by themselves to take the necessary measures to ensure their growth and development.
