pursuant to Rule 133 of the Rules of Procedure

on support for a macro‑regional strategy for mountain areas

Mara Bizzotto

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on support for a macro‑regional strategy for mountain areas

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas the continuously evolving labour market and, in particular, the lack of basic services that could – in spite of logistical issues – afford mountain residents an adequate quality of life, such as hospitals, transport links and government offices, have triggered a trend for individuals relocating from mountain areas to lowland regions;

B.  whereas it is important to take account of the unique features of the mountain environment, with targeted action to support the fine food products, artisan expertise, cultural values and tourist attractions that these regions can offer;

1.  Calls on the Commission to strengthen the role of the macro‑regional strategy in order to promote mountain areas and ensure that inhabitants have access to the tools they need to best manage their territory;

2.   Calls on the Commission to support the implementation of mountain infrastructure networks in order that residents in mountain regions may enjoy transport links in line with the rest of the country and Europe as whole, and to adopt appropriate measures ensuring access to medical and health care for European citizens living in mountain areas, thereby putting a stop to the trend of closing hospitals in remote regions.
