B8-0228/2016

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.whereas healthy and good eating habits are an important part of health and a healthy lifestyle;

B.whereas the eating habits we acquire in childhood have a lasting impact;

C.whereas children and young people are increasingly suffering from poor health, obesity, diabetes, etc.;

D.whereas in very few Member States is free access to school meals in primary and secondary schools systematically organised and compulsory or universal;

E.whereas the quality of packed lunches prepared by parents themselves is highly dependent on the family’s socio-economic circumstances, and whereas not having organised school meals makes it more difficult to feed children healthily(1),

1.  Calls on the Commission to promote and encourage universal free access to school meals by means of projects based on best practice and mutual learning, and to provide financial support under the relevant European funds or programmes.
