Motion for a resolution of the European Parliament on ending the derogation from the requirement of stunning prior to slaughter in respect of organically reared animals

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to the regulation on the protection of animals at the time of killing,

–  having regard to the regulation on organic production and labelling of organic products,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas the European legal framework pursues the objective of 'maintaining and justifying consumer confidence in products labelled as organic' and whereas 'high animal welfare standards' are normally deemed to apply to such products;

B.  whereas respect for high animal welfare standards is not compatible with animals having their throats cut without prior stunning;

C.  whereas the stunning before slaughter of animals reared to produce organic meat does not adversely affect the right to manifest religion in practice and observance, as enshrined in the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union;

1.  Calls for an end to the derogation from stunning before slaughter in the organic sector in order to maintain consumer confidence and ensure animal welfare;

2.  Urges the Commission to carry out checks on animal welfare in slaughterhouses connected with the organic sector;

3.  Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Commission and the Member States.
