MOTION FOR A RESOLUTION on the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA)

25.5.2016

pursuant to Rule 133 of the Rules of Procedure

Edouard Ferrand

B8-0682/2016

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA)

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas the European Union and Canada have concluded an economic and trade agreement, the objective of which, according to the Commission, is 'to increase bilateral trade and investment flows and contribute to growth in times of economic uncertainty. This is in line with the Europe 2020 strategy to boost growth through external competitiveness and the participation in open and fair markets worldwide';

B.  whereas the reality differs from the Commission's wishes, given that the agreement provides for opening up the European market to 50 000 tonnes of beef and to 75 000 tonnes of pork;

C.  whereas the EU will sacrifice 90% of its Protected Designations of Origin, which are the guarantee that European producers' outstanding products will not be plagiarised, on the altar of free trade;

D.  whereas almost 1 400 products that have attained this recognition from the EU are now at risk of disappearing due to unfair and unscrupulous competition;

1.  Calls on the Commission to denounce this agreement, which runs counter to European interests and is dangerous for our high-quality and globally respected products;
