pursuant to Rule 133 of the Rules of Procedure

on the regulation of data collection in motor vehicles

Franz Obermayr

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on the regulation of data collection in motor vehicles

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas new vehicles produced by large car manufacturers are increasingly equipped with SIM cards and that, pursuant to the Amendment to Directive 2007/46/EC, car manufacturers will be obliged to equip all new vehicles with an eCall system as of 31 March 2018;

B.  whereas the Amendment to Directive 2007/46/EC regulates data collection only within the eCall system and, as a result, other areas of in-vehicle data collection are not covered, thereby giving car manufacturers the chance to collect data without the consumer’s consent;

1.  Believes that, despite a reported improvement in the assistance provided after road accidents, data should be given the highest level of protection;

2.  Calls on Parliament to take measures to curtail the current vacuum which enables manufacturers to collect large amounts of data before the Directive enters into force and to urge car manufacturers to take a responsible approach when dealing with in-vehicle data.
