Aldo Patriciello

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on a call for measures in support of Member States for more efficient fund management as regards the prevention of forest fires
B8-0826/2016

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Commission Communication COM(2013)0659,

–  having regard to Regulation (EC) No 2152/2003 of the European Parliament and of the Council,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas every year Europe is affected by forest fires which destroy thousands of hectares of forest;

B.  whereas these fires occur mainly in southern European Member States and despite that, no European country can be considered to be completely immune from the problem;

C.  whereas, to date, there is no common forestry policy that enables the problem to be managed jointly and, as a result, it is up to the Member States to identify ways in which to tackle the issue of fires and how to prevent them;

D.  whereas, even though forest protection is often assisted by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), the European Court of Auditors has recently pointed out that the funds to prevent damage to forests caused by fires and natural disasters are not being managed efficiently;

1.  Calls on the Commission to take measures to support Member States in the effective use of prevention funds through greater cooperation in managing the problem.
