B8-0832/2016

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on conditions on turkey farms

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas animal welfare associations have uncovered unacceptable practices employed on some turkey farms;

B.  whereas 46 million turkeys are reared each year in France alone, primarily for their meat; whereas, crammed into overcrowded buildings or tiny cages, turkeys do not have the space they need to behave naturally;

C.  whereas these practices must be stopped as a matter of urgency, all the more so given that alternatives are available;

1.  Calls on the Commission to consider ways of incorporating concerns about the treatment of turkeys into national strategies to improve animal welfare.
