Motion for a European Parliament resolution on new ways of reusing plastic bags, also in order to reduce their release into the sea
B8-0837/2016

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to European Parliament resolution 2013/2113(INI),

–  having regard to the Commission Green Paper COM(2013)0123 final,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas, according to a recent report by the United Nations, the health of the oceans and of marine flora and fauna is being seriously endangered owing to a number of factors, including the presence of plastic bags in our seas;

B.  whereas according to a study conducted by UNEP in 2015, 20 million tonnes of plastic end up in the oceans each year;

C.  whereas, even though there are some types of plastic which are supposedly biodegradable, full biodegradability can occur only in specific, and therefore extremely rare, conditions;

D.  whereas marine pollution can also harm human health, as people who eat fish can indirectly ingest the toxic substances contained in plastic;

1.  Calls on the Commission to promote in-depth research to identify new ways of reusing plastic bags, to reduce their release into the sea and thereby to comply with the relevant UN commitments.
