pursuant to Rule 133 of the Rules of Procedure

B8-0924/2016

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on supporting museums and theatres at risk of closure

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Article 167 TFEU,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas the European Union strives to support and promote the arts and the creative sector;

B.  whereas culture has a strategic value, in that it may be regarded as the cornerstone of not only economic, but also cultural and social progress, supporting the growth and cohesion of future European generations;

C.  whereas the economic crisis led to a gradual, but increasingly steep reduction, in funding for cultural businesses and structures, and that every year these businesses are forced to keep going with a series of small funds which inevitably generate further difficulties;

D.  whereas, although in the area of regional policy, the European Union does provide funding for the restoration of historic theatres, an increasing number of museums and theatres are finding it impossible to keep going;

1.  Calls on the Commission to enable museums and theatres at risk of closure to access ad hoc funding to prevent them from having to close down permanently, thereby minimising the cultural and economic losses that would ensue as a result.
