4.7.2016

pursuant to Rule 133 of the Rules of Procedure

Aldo Patriciello

B8-0959/2016

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on the hazards of the indiscriminate use of insecticides

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Articles 191 and 193 TFEU,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas the European Union aims to protect citizens by shielding them from chemical substances that are harmful to health and the environment;

B.  whereas the Asian tiger mosquito is currently very widespread in Europe and is to blame for the outbreak of as many as twenty different types of disease;

C.  whereas, in contrast to the indigenous mosquito that only bites at night, the Asian tiger mosquito is also active during the day, leading to an increasingly casual use of insecticides, which are being used in large quantities;

D.  whereas the widespread use of insecticides, despite not stopping the adult Asian tiger mosquito, significantly affects species that should be safeguarded, such as domestic and wild bees, fireflies and butterflies, and whereas the ingestion of these insects by animals such as birds and hedgehogs stunts these animals’ development;

1.  Calls on the Commission to put together an information campaign on the hazards of the indiscriminate use of insecticides, for the sake of protecting the environment and human health.
