Motion for a Parliament resolution on nuclear power

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas 120 000 people are employed in the nuclear power industry in France and the total number of direct, indirect and induced jobs is 410 000;

B.  whereas nuclear power is currently the cheapest of all the energies (uranium, transportation, low area used, etc.);

C.  whereas the renewable energy sector, such as wind or solar power, engages in social and environmental dumping (from Asia), is highly subsidised and cannot operate at all times because it relies on the weather;

D.  whereas other energies, such as coal- and lignite-fired power stations, are highly polluting and are estimated to cause almost 22 000 deaths in Europe and 1 000 in France, also emitting more than 300 million tonnes of CO2;

1.  Calls on the Commission to conduct a clear and independent study on the advantages of nuclear power and the areas where improvement is required with regard to security or the investments that need to be made;

2.  Calls on the Commission to stop subsidies on renewable energy and other polluting energies to redirect them towards the investments required for nuclear power;

3.  Instructs its President to forward this resolution, together with the names of the signatories, to the Commission, the Council and the Member States.
