MOTION FOR A RESOLUTION on developing tourism accessible to all in Europe

Motion for a resolution of the European Parliament on developing tourism accessible to all in Europe

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas according to the World Health Organization (WHO), 15 % of the world’s population suffers from a disability of some kind or another and whereas it is reckoned that in the European Union there are 80 million people with a disability and a growing number of dependent elderly people;

B.  whereas developing tourism facilities, products and services that are accessible to all ought to be a basic principle of all tourism development policies in Europe;

C.  whereas making tourism accessible to all would place all members of the public on a genuinely equal footing as regards taking holidays;

1.  Encourages the Commission and the Member States to take all necessary steps for transport systems, places open to the public, tourist and historical sites, and tourist destinations to be properly equipped for easy access by any disabled or dependent person;

2.  Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Commission, the Council and the Member States.
