Motion for a European Parliament resolution on the vaccine against salmonella
The European Parliament,
– having regard to Article 168 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union,
– having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,
A. whereas diarrhoeal diseases affect 550 million people every year; whereas salmonella, a type of bacteria in the Enterobacteriaceae family of which there are about 2500 serotypes, is one of the four biggest causes of diarrhoeal diseases and, in particular, salmonellosis;
B. whereas, in 2015, 94 625 cases of salmonellosis were detected in the 28 EU Member States – the equivalent of 21.2 cases per 100 000 persons, which is 1.9% more than in 2014; whereas, according to the World Health Organisation, the migrant crisis has contributed to that increase;
C. whereas salmonellosis is treated using antibiotics but, according to the US Center for Disease Control and Surveillance, about 10% of salmonella infections were resistant to antibiotics in 2015;
D. whereas a study carried out by the University of Texas (Galveston, US, 14 December 2016) led to the creation of an oral vaccine;
1. Calls on the Commission to support research and make it possible for a vaccine against salmonellosis to be brought onto the EU market if need be.
