Motion for a European Parliament resolution on the upsurge in cases gout  

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Article 168 TFEU,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas gout is a chronic illness caused by a build-up of uric acid in the blood, leading to painful arthritic symptoms and other complications, such as fatal kidney failure;

B.  whereas gout affects 1% of the global population and 5 000 people in every 100 000 in the United States, and whereas, according to a BBC article published on 16 January 2014, 1 in 40 UK adults suffers from the condition; whereas the prevalence of gout is rising by 4% every year;

C.  whereas, gout is caused by poor diet in at least 12% of cases, and whereas the consumption of alcohol and drinks containing added sugars constitutes a risk factor;

D.  whereas more than half the European population is overweight, which is also a risk factor for gout;

1.  Encourages the Commission to raise awareness among the European population of the importance of eating a balanced diet and to ensure that the competent European agencies launch programmes to monitor gout.
