Motion for a European Parliament resolution on the protection of ‘Mozzarella di Bufala’ PDO

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas ‘Mozzarella di Bufala Campana’ PDO (hereinafter MBC PDO) is a fresh pulled-curd cheese, produced in accordance with the strict guidelines set out in Council Regulation (EEC) No 2081/1992 with Europe-wide legal force and, most recently, pursuant to the terms of Commission Regulation (EC) No 103/2008; whereas this was reaffirmed and enshrined as a compulsory production rule in Council Regulation (EC) 510/2006 of 20 March 2006 on the protection of geographical indications and designations of origin for agricultural products and foodstuffs;

B.  whereas on 4 May 2017, a meeting of the MBC PDO Consortium produced a new amendment proposal, with 18 points of amendment, including: the packaging and sale of MBC PDO at temperatures below -18 degrees centigrade; the production of 1 kg blocks; the use not only of boiling water in the production of curd crumbs, but also the use of steam, which is useful and necessary for thawing out frozen products;

1.  Calls on Parliament to take all the necessary measures to protect the high quality of ‘Mozzarella di Bufala Campana’ PDO and in particular to block any amendment to the product specifications currently in force.
