Motion for a European Parliament resolution on the protection and promotion of regional and minority languages in the EU  

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas the European Union is home to over 60 regional or minority languages spoken by more than 40 million people;

B.  whereas nearly all regional and minority language communities face difficulties in ensuring the survival of their languages; whereas 49 languages are severely endangered;

C.  whereas the protection of regional and minority languages is a human rights obligation; whereas regional and minority languages are an essential component of the construction of equal, multicultural and tolerant societies and part of human identity;

1.  Calls on the Commission to consider further action on the protection of endangered languages and to provide increased financial support to language communities and to local and regional authorities in order to raise awareness of lesser-used languages;

2.  Calls on the Commission to advise the Member States and regional and local authorities that similar support should be given to each endangered regional or minority language community;

3.  Calls on the Commission to encourage the Member States to use regional or minority languages spoken within their territories during European and all other election campaigns;

4.  Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Council, the Commission and the governments and parliaments of the Member States.
