MOTION FOR A RESOLUTION on children who are victims of violence and mistreatment in Europe

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on children who are victims of violence and mistreatment in Europe

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas the not-for-profit organisation Telefono Azzurro, which campaigns for the defence of children’s rights, has recently published the file ‘Sexual abuse and paedophilia’, in which it highlights that 18 million children were victims of sexual abuse in Europe in 2016;

B.  whereas the telephone helplines Emergenza Infanzia and Telefono Azzurro, which respond to calls for help from children and adolescents who have been victims of violence, have reported that the number of complaints from children who have suffered violence increased from 2015 to 2016;

C.  whereas these burgeoning forms of violence against children and adolescents are now being disseminated via the internet;

D.  whereas pursuant to Articles 19 and 34 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, children must be safeguarded against all forms of violence, abuse and mistreatment;

1.  Calls on the Commission to implement every possible measure to combat all forms of violence against children;

2.  Calls on the Commission to protect children and adolescents in Europe, including through support for organisations for the defence of children’s rights.
