on the threats to freedom of expression posed by the Commission

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on the threats to freedom of expression posed by the Commission  

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas Mariya Gabriel, the new Commissioner for the Digital Economy and Society, has said she wants to set up an expert group on ‘fake news’;

B.  whereas, as always, the aim of this Commission will be to find ways of cracking down on those who disseminate ‘fake news’, either through penalties or censorship;

C.  whereas, moreover, there is nothing more anti-democratic than to leave it up to ‘experts’ or other unelected Commission technocrats to dictate what is true and what is false;

D.  whereas, lastly, although freedom of expression should be one of the key values of our democratic societies, it is under constant attack from governments and big business;

1.  Calls on the Commission to refrain from establishing an expert group on ‘fake news’;

2.  Calls on the Commission to set up a committee to investigate the multiple forms of censorship to which certain large digital groups such as Facebook and Twitter devote themselves.
