B8‑0133/2018

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on establishing a ‘Day of Remembrance’ to commemorate the victims of the Foibe massacres

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, in particular Articles 2 and 19 thereof,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas the EU has played a stabilising role in transforming most of Europe from a continent of war into one of peace;

B.  whereas the European Union is committed to promoting peace and reconciliation, democracy and human rights;

C.  whereas the massacres of the Italian populations of Venezia Giulia and Dalmatia perpetrated by Yugoslav partisans during the Second World War and its immediate aftermath claimed the lives of over 10 000 Italian citizens;

1.  Takes the view that it would be appropriate to establish a ‘Day of Remembrance’ at European level to commemorate the victims of the Foibe massacres;

2.  Takes the view that 10 February should be designated the ‘Day of Remembrance’ in order to preserve and revive the memory of the Italian victims and all other victims of the Foibe massacres, along with the exodus of the people of Istria, Fiume and Dalmatia from their lands after the Second World War.
