Motion for a European Parliament resolution on the introduction of a low glycaemic index (LGI) symbol for foodstuffs in Europe
The European Parliament,
– having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,
A. whereas several scientific studies have shown that diets which reduce blood sugar spikes after meals are associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease and obesity;
B. whereas one of the simplest and most effective methods of controlling post-prandial glycaemia includes slowing down the absorption of carbohydrates in food, choosing foods with a low glycaemic index (GI);
C. whereas, to enable consumers to make informed choices, some non-European countries are allowing low GI foods with nutritional profiles that are in keeping with food guidelines to be labelled as such; whereas the introduction of such labelling appears to be improving the well-being of the population in general and of those with diabetes in particular;
1. Calls on the Commission to take measures to ensure that a low glycaemic index (LGI) symbol is included on the labelling of food products in Europe, to promote healthy food choices, with the aim of reducing the risk of diet-related diseases and complications, as well as health costs in Europe.
