Motion for a European Parliament resolution on protecting mountain farms from wolf predation
The European Parliament,
– having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,
A. whereas the Habitats Directive 92/43/EEC grants wolves protected species status;
B. whereas European Parliament Resolution 2017/2819 shows how wolves can have a negative impact on the sustainable development of the ecosystems and socio-economic activities of inhabited rural areas;
C. whereas in some regions of Europe, such as in the Veneto and Trentino Alto-Adige, wolves are not threatened with extinction, and the proliferation of these animals is endangering the survival of mountain farms with frequent predation and attacks inflicting huge losses on farmers;
D. whereas agricultural and agro-forestry-pastoral activities play a fundamental role in protecting and exploiting mountain areas and foothills;
1. Calls on the Commission to evaluate the possibility of changing the protected status of wolves in the Veneto and Trentino Alto-Adige, allowing regions to implement plans for the containment, capture and selective killing of wolves;
2. Calls on the Commission to consider drawing up adequate protection and support measures for farmers affected by wolf predation.
