pursuant to Rule 133 of the Rules of Procedure

on the promotion of agroecology and agroforestry

Mireille D’Ornano

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on the promotion of agroecology and agroforestry

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Article 191 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas agroecology and agroforestry are part of a fully sustainable approach based on the opportunities provided by natural ecosystems, in which animals and plants work the land in a natural way;

B.  whereas this approach makes it possible to slash farmers’ costs because there is no need for pesticides, fertilisers or GMOs, and whereas this in turn reduces the risks to the environment (soil, water and air) and to human and animal health;

C.  whereas agroecology and agroforestry are already practised in a number of countries, making for high-quality production, as well as farms that are more resilient, especially in the face of natural hazards;

1.  Calls on the Commission, therefore, to mount an awareness-raising campaign on the potential that agroecology and agroforestry have;

2.  Calls on the Commission to promote, under the common agricultural policy, the gradual transformation of farming as it is today – i.e. productivist and with a very short-term outlook – into sustainable agroecology, with a focus on agroforestry as well, in order to guarantee respect for health and the environment, and for farmers themselves by means of fairer incomes.
