Motion for a European Parliament resolution on the establishment of a European strategy for the promotion of European common identity and culture through cinema and TV series

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  emphasising the need to promote at EU level joint cultural and educational measures aimed at younger people in particular, in order to promote a sense of belonging to the European Union;

B.  whereas film productions and, in particular, TV series, have become hugely popular among EU citizens;

C.  whereas, as theorised by political scientist Joseph Nye, the attractiveness of a nation, or a group of nations, is not solely represented by their economic and military force, but is nurtured through the spread of their culture and historical founding values;

1.  Calls on the Commission to submit proposals with a view to supporting European film productions in making films and TV series that are able to promote, among the general public, greater knowledge of the historical facts and leading figures that have shaped the history of Europe, and in particular that of European integration.
