Motion for a European Parliament resolution on protecting Italian-grown hazelnuts and on the risk of imports of hazelnuts from Turkey that are harmful to health

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas hazelnut cultivation is a growing business in Italy and is vital for the Italian confectionery sector;

B.  whereas Italy is the leading producer of hazelnuts in Europe, with three varieties of Italian PDO and PGI hazelnut grown on around 71 000 hectares of land;

C.  whereas Turkey is the world’s largest producer of hazelnuts; whereas, in the first eight months of 2018 imports of Turkish hazelnuts to Italy increased sharply by 30%, amounting to a total of 21 million kilos;

D.  whereas in the first nine months of 2018 the European Rapid Alert System (RASFF) registered 39 alerts concerning Turkish hazelnuts imported to the EU with excessively high levels of aflatoxins which were thus endangering the health of European consumers;

1.  Calls on the Commission to consider limiting imports of hazelnuts from Turkey to the EU in order to protect food safety in Europe and the health of Italian and European citizens;

2.  Calls on the Commission to provide adequate support for producers of Italian-grown hazelnuts.
