Motion for a European Parliament resolution on support for the Italian poultry sector

The European Parliament,

 having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A. whereas the Italian poultry sector is an important production sector employing 64 000 people;

B. whereas in the first few months of 2019 there was a general reduction in farm gate prices for many types of Italian poultry meat, and in particular the price of chicken, which fell to EUR 0.86/kg, a decline of 22.4 % compared to the same period in 2018;

C. whereas this situation, which is creating difficulties for the Italian poultry sector, is caused by a distortion of the internal market due to a number of factors, including the increase in imports of poultry meat from non-EU countries at very low prices;

D. whereas, moreover, the labelling of poultry meat is causing some comprehension difficulties for consumers;

1. Calls on the Commission to increase support for the Italian poultry sector by taking appropriate measures;

2. Calls on it, in addition, to assess whether it might be possible to improve the information provided on poultry meat labels.
