Motion for a European Parliament resolution on support for the Italian and European fruit and vegetable sector

The European Parliament,

 having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A. whereas before 2014, Russia imported fruit and vegetables from the European Union to the tune of some EUR 2.3 billion;

B. whereas the embargo imposed by Russia in response to the EU sanctions has had negative effects on prices and, as a result, a severe impact on Italian and European fruit and vegetable producers;

C. whereas fruit and vegetable exports from Italy slowed down significantly in 2018, declining by around 450 000 tonnes and more than 300 million in turnover; whereas, in particular, the quantity of fresh fruit fell by 16.2 % and its value by 11 %;

D. whereas, in addition, many producers are concerned about difficulties in exporting fruit and vegetables to certain third countries, due to the presence of phytosanitary barriers;

1. Calls on the Commission to develop some support measures for the Italian and European fruit and vegetable sector;

2. Calls on the Commission to consider lifting the EU sanctions against Russia in order to reopen export channels for Italian and European fruit and vegetables with this important market;

3. Calls on the Commission to promote negotiations with third countries in order to open up new markets for Italian and European fruit and vegetables.
