Motion for a European Parliament resolution on the introduction of draughts at school

The European Parliament,

 having regard to Articles 6 and 165 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union,

 having regard to Question for written answer E-000860/2018,

 having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A. whereas the game of draughts is accessible to children from all social groups and can contribute to social cohesion and achievement of strategic objectives such as social integration, combating discrimination, reducing delinquency and helping to prevent various forms of addiction.

B. whereas the Commission has already acknowledged the potential benefits of the game of draughts at school, particularly when it comes to developing children’s concentration, patience, perseverance, creativity, insight and memory, while cross-border projects centred on the educational or recreational aspects of the game are eligible for funding under the Erasmus+ programme;

1. Calls for the introduction of a ‘draughts at school’ programme in the Member States;

2. Calls on the Commission, in its next communication on sport, to give due attention to developing a ‘draughts at school’ programme and securing appropriate funding from 2020;

3. Calls on the Commission to take into consideration the results of any studies on the effects of this programme on children’s development.
