Motion for a Parliament resolution on the protection of Christian believers throughout the world


The European Parliament,


 having regard to Rule 143 of its Rules of Procedure,


  1. whereas, according to the World Watch List on the global persecution of Christians, drawn up each year by the NGO Open Doors, over 245 million Christians worldwide are victims of violence and injustice every day because of their faith;


  1. whereas, from 1 November 2017 to 31 October 2018, 4 305 Christians were killed in the world, especially in Africa and Asia, by regimes hostile to the Christian religion;


  1. whereas the protection of freedom of religion and belief is one of the EU's priorities; whereas the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy has repeatedly confirmed the EU's commitment in that regard;




1.  Calls on the Commission to step up its efforts to counter the increasing violence and injustice suffered by Christians in the EU and throughout the world;


2. Urges it to make representations to the governments of countries where Christians are the target of intense hostility, with a view to ensuring that they no longer suffer intolerance and persecution;


3. Asks it to establish an inter-institutional forum to promote exchanges of good practice regarding respect for the Christian faith throughout the world.
