Marlene Mizzi (S&D), in writing. ‒ I voted in favour of the European Parliament report on the reform of the electoral law. In my opinion, the report provides valuable recommendations that will lead to more transparent, visible, fair and democratic European elections.

We need improvement to the European electoral law in order to bring the European Parliament closer to its citizens. Having said that, however, I also acknowledge that the electoral law needs fully to respect the principles of subsidiarity and proportionality, and that it should be seen in relation to the national context, cultures and traditions of each and every country.

I welcome the recommendation to lower the voting age to 16 years.
