Protection of individuals with regard to the processing of personal data (A8-0139/2016 - Jan Philipp Albrecht)

Philippe De Backer (ALDE), in writing. – Personal data is becoming increasingly important and so is its processing. As a legislator, I can only approve of adopting a regulation that increases the protection of our citizens in this regard, while at the same time ensuring the free movement of data. It will facilitate the well-functioning of the digital single market and ensure the protection of the EU citizen’s personal data.

To name only a few of these positive consequences; this regulation will give increased legal certainty to businesses across the EU, while giving the consumer the right of being informed when his/her information was to be hacked. In addition, there will be a smoother, easier exchange of information between both Member States and these businesses. I put my trust in the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE), which has negotiated this deal thoroughly with the Council, resulting in an almost full consensus.
