The New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition (A8-0169/2016 - Maria Heubuch)
Doru-Claudian Frunzulică (S&D), in writing. ‒ The New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition in Africa (NAFSN), launched in May 2012 under the auspices of the G8, aims to create the conditions that will allow the African countries concerned to improve agricultural productivity and develop their agrifood sector by attracting more private investment in agriculture. While the general objective of the NAFSN is sound, certain deficiencies remain which are underlined in the report. African governments should invest more in local food systems in order to boost rural economies, ensure decent jobs, equitable social safety nets and labour rights; to improve arrangements for democratic scrutiny of access to resources, including farmers’ seeds; and to ensure the effective engagement of small-scale producers in policy processes and implementation. The EU should address all NAFSN deficiencies outlined in the report, including enhancing its transparency and governance, so as to ensure that actions taken under the New Alliance are consistent with development policy goals. I supported the report in the plenary.
