Therese Comodini Cachia (PPE), in writing. ‒ This is an important instrument which has been ratified by all the EU Member States, providing protection for the interest of those children who are victims of abduction. The Convention introduces a system of cooperation, aimed at settling cases of international child abduction, between contracting states which are often at loggerheads declaring themselves competent, with each of them awarding custody of the child to the parent who is a national of their state. An important development introduced by the Convention is a system which ensures the immediate return of children who have been abducted. Following the accession of Peru to the Convention, a Council decision is therefore necessary to authorise the two Member States which have not yet accepted the accession of Peru – Austria and Romania – to accept that accession. This will allow the Convention to enter into force between Peru and the entire European Union.
