Csaba Sógor (PPE). – Mr President, a reinforced, simpler and more focused cohesion policy that takes into account the investment needs of all regions is the best answer the EU can give both to historical development disparities and to the new challenges of our changing world.

It was never an easy task to reconcile all the constraints and needs related to this file, starting from Brexit-induced budgetary constraints, stakeholder calls for simplification or the identification of those ex-ante conditionalities which are essential for the good implementation of the funds, but I think that ultimately we obtained a good result.

I especially welcome that we managed to agree on diverting as few resources as possible from the Cohesion Fund to other objectives. It is important to equip ourselves with innovative financial instruments, but let’s not forget that there are still countries in the EU that lack the basic environmental, transport or energy infrastructure that is indispensable for their future development.
