Discontinuing seasonal changes of time (debate)

Indrek Tarand (Verts/ALE). – Mr President, I would like to address mostly colleagues Mr van Dalen and Mr Langen. Instrument of a rural economy invented by Kaiser Wilhelm II and Tsar Nicholas II continued by dictators Stalin and Hitler during World War II, the instrument called ‘annual clock change’ must be stopped. The EU after all is a peace project isn’t it? It seems that clock change is the last remnant of the Second World War, so let’s do away with it.

We should not give the Council, and colleagues who think like you, more extra time to sort out all sorts of obscure objections, even if governments cannot make reasonable decisions and threaten our logistical systems and common markets with patchworks and chaos. We should call their bluff. Everybody can adjust with time zones and different official times. The Tokyo and New York stock exchanges can work together despite different times.
