Adapting to development in the road transport sector (A8-0204/2018 - Ismail Ertug)

Rupert Matthews (ECR). – Mr President, I voted against this proposal because, as so often in this place, it is heaping extra burdens onto small businesses that can ill afford them. Very often big companies and big organisations that can afford to pay lobbyists get through the doors here and are able to influence the legislation that goes through.

This is, I am afraid, another example where the legislation that we are putting through is absolutely fine for large companies that can afford the extra costs, but small companies will be unable to afford the extra costs that we are piling onto them and will therefore be at a disadvantage. Having run a small business myself, I know only too well the disproportionate effects that these sorts of regulations can have, and it is for that reason that I voted against this measure, in order to support small companies.
