Statement by the candidate Commission President (debate)

Márton Gyöngyösi (NI). – Madam President, many of us thought that Brexit is a lesson and an opportunity for the European political elite, a signal that a change of course is necessary. EU citizens are rightly discontent with the undemocratic and intransparent decision-making in this House and in other EU institutions.

Ms von der Leyen, your reference to a strengthening of the Spitzenkandidaten system was somewhat ironic, if not cynical; this is the system that was ditched in order to nominate you here. The Spitzenkandaten system is far from being perfect, but it was a step in the right direction to select a nominee to head the European Commission. Your nomination just shows that the leaders of the EU ignored the voice of the European electorate and don’t learn from their earlier mistakes. Such decisions and ignorance fuel euroscepticism and criticism, so beware and don’t be surprised: this is a disappointment for those who wish to see a stronger, more credible, more democratic and more transparent EU. Ms von der Leyen, it is not your fault, but you have greatly contributed to this disappointment, and this is why many people in this Chamber find your nomination unacceptable.
