One-minute speeches on matters of political importance

Tatjana Ždanoka (Verts/ALE). – Mr President, this morning in Riga, in front of the Lithuanian Embassy, we demonstrated our solidarity with the political prisoner Algirdas Paleckis, one of the most outstanding anti—fascist activists in Lithuania and a former Member of Parliament, who has been in prison for one year. Algirdas is being persecuted for his opinion dissenting from the official one on some events in the modern history of Lithuania, namely in January 1991. Political prisoners in the European Union include: in the Baltic Sea, Algirdas Paleckis, as well as a number of other Lithuanian and Latvian people; in the Mediterranean, my former colleagues, MEPs Oriol Junqueras and Raul Romeva, as well as a number of other Catalan people. Political prisoners in the European Union – in the European Union, which is teaching the whole world how to respect human rights. Liberating Algirdas, Oriol, Raul and all the other political prisoners would be a good start for the European Union towards respect for political freedoms.
