  John Howarth (S&D). – Madam President, the collapse of the Thomas Cook Group has had a serious effect on consumers, employees and businesses across Europe. Across South-East England, an estimated 21 000 customers are waiting for refunds for their trips, protected by ATOL and EU legislation. Gatwick, the largest charter airport in the UK, is the biggest employer in and around Crawley. More than 500 jobs at the airport were dependent on Thomas Cook.

I’m pleased to see the Parliament calling for a thorough analysis of the collapse, better to anticipate – and hopefully to prevent – these situations happening in future. The resolution also highlights the possibilities provided by the Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF) to assist people who have lost their jobs. The UK Government should make use of this facility to offer training and assistance to those seeking new jobs. I’m writing to the Secretary of State to urge her to do so at the earliest opportunity.

  Rory Palmer (S&D). – Madam President, when I step off the train this evening in Leicester, I will immediately see the statue of Thomas Cook, there to commemorate Thomas Cook, his business, and indeed some of the first pioneering journeys he organised. In fact, in 1885, his first trip organised to Europe took in Brussels and Strasbourg, the cities, of course, of our European Parliament. And of course, the passengers on those first journeys organised by Thomas Cook into Europe will not have had the protection of ATOL or, indeed, the European Union.

We must make sure that passengers affected by the collapse of travel companies today, and indeed the workers of such companies, are fully protected in the future and that the lessons are learnt from the devastating collapse of Thomas Cook, which has affected 600 000 passengers and many thousands of workers across the UK and Europe.

  François-Xavier Bellamy (PPE). – Madame la Présidente, Chers collègues, sommes-nous des parlementaires sérieux? Nous avons voté ce matin une résolution sur la faillite de Thomas Cook et une autre sur le comportement de la Turquie, qui concernent directement l'action de l'Union européenne. Je voudrais prendre un peu de recul et je prends la parole ici pour dire mon étonnement devant bien des résolutions sur lesquelles portent nos débats ou nos votes.

Avons-nous si bien résolu tous nos problèmes pour que nous puissions maintenant nous préoccuper de ceux des autres? L'Union européenne va-t-elle si bien que nous puissions, parlementaires européens, consacrer tant de temps à donner des leçons au reste du monde? Et en agissant ainsi, d'ailleurs, sommes-nous si sûrs de ne pas faire reculer les causes que nous prétendons défendre? Car en nous donnant un droit d'ingérence perpétuel sur les affaires intérieures de pays souverains, nous contribuons souvent à augmenter encore les tensions, et ceci est plus grave encore quand il s'agit d'États membres de l'Union européenne. Doutons-nous à ce point de la démocratie dans certains pays, par exemple en Pologne, pour prétendre régler à leur place des débats qui concernent leurs affaires intérieures.

Le travail parlementaire consiste à dire le droit au nom de ceux qui nous ont élus et pour eux. Il consiste à agir sur le réel pour servir le bien et la justice dans nos pays. Tout se passe aujourd'hui comme si, ne parvenant plus à agir sur notre destin, nous passions notre temps à commenter celui des autres, comme si nous devenions bavards à mesure que nous devenons impuissants. J'ai l'impression d'avoir parfois rejoint un tribunal fictif, plutôt qu'un parlement réel.

  Stanislav Polčák (PPE). – Paní předsedající, já souhlasím s tím, že musíme pomoci při takto ohromném účinku pádu této cestovní kanceláře, že máme pomoci zákazníkům, samozřejmě spotřebitelům. Ten přeshraniční účinek v tomto případě je nesporný, ten řetězec dopadl samozřejmě na zákazníky, spotřebitele, na podnikatele. Na druhou stranu chci zdůraznit, že tu základní odpovědnost mají především členské státy a je to jejich právo. Mně se nelíbilo, jak kolegové z levé části spektra se snažili vtáhnout Komisi nadbytečně do řešení této otázky.

Objevili se i návrhy na snížení těch obrovitých odměn, které získávali manažeři, to je prostě věc zejména akcionářů, myslím si, případně zákazníků, je to věc soukromého práva a nemyslím si, že je vhodné, aby do toho vstupovala veřejná moc. Takže z mé strany je to jakýsi odsudek toho rovnostářského přístupu, který zazníval v tom návrhu usnesení, přesto jsem jej tedy podpořil, protože podstatná část návrhu neprošla.
