Preparation of the European Council meeting of 12 and 13 December 2019 (debate)

Michael Bloss (Verts/ALE). – Madam President, I take it from Ms in 't Veld that the young generation voted in the European elections and they voted for climate action. They want us to act, they want the Commission to act and they want the Council to act on climate. If Parliament now does act, they will hopefully declare a climate emergency. But what is emerging is the youth, and what we have to do as politicians is to act. Therefore, I hope that the Council will decide to become climate neutral, that the Commission will agree to increase the 2030 targets to least 65% and that this Parliament will not only declare a climate emergency but also act on it.
