Energy security

Question for written answer E-005971-14
to the Commission
Rule 130
Vladimír Maňka (S&D)

In the wake of the gas-price impasse between Ukraine and Russia, numerous proposals on how to tackle Europe’s energy security are being tabled.

Recently Poland’s president Donald Tusk ventured the idea of a programme where Russian gas would be bought jointly for the whole of the EU.

The resultant body would be sure to have greater leverage in negotiations with Russia’s Gazprom.

On the other hand, we should not lose sight of the fact that there are other gas suppliers here. A central purchaser would extract better prices for us from all suppliers.

This begs the question: if we are to purchase gas for the whole of the EU, then why not other energy raw materials too? I would like to know what plans the Commission has in this respect.
