Answer given by Mr Andor on behalf of the Commission
Question reference: E-006042/2014

The Commission is aware that the UK Government has adopted or intends to adopt measures that may affect access by mobile EU workers to welfare benefits in the UK. The Commission is in contact with the UK authorities concerned with a view to discussing the issue, and it continuously assesses such measures in detail to ensure that they comply fully with the EU rules on free movement of workers(1) and social security coordination(2).

(1)Regulation (EU) No 492/2011 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 5 April 2011 on freedom of movement for workers within the Union, OJ L 141, 27.5.2011, p. 1.
(2)Regulation (EC) No 883/2004 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 29 April 2004 on the coordination of social security systems, OJ L 166, 30.4.2004, p. 1; Regulation (EC) No 987/2009 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 16 September 2009 laying down the procedure for implementing Regulation (EC) No 883/2004 on the coordination of social security systems, OJ L 284, 30.10.2009, p. 1.
