E-007503-14
Question for written answer E-007503-14
to the Commission
Rule 130
Roberta Metsola (PPE)

 Subject:  Obesity
 Answer in writing

According to the Commission’s recent Eurobarometer survey on sport and physical activity, 75% of Maltese respondents said that they never exercise or play sport, while 57% never engage in other physical activities such as cycling, dancing or gardening. Furthermore, the results of a survey by The Lancet medical journal in May 2014 conclude that Malta still has one of the highest rates of obesity, with 74% of adult men and 58% of adult women respectively being obese or overweight.

1. Based on the conclusions of the survey and the report, does the Commission plan to take action to combat this pandemic problem found in Maltese society?

2. Is the Commission planning to create programmes to encourage exercise and raise awareness of this serious issue?
