E-008553/2014(ASW)
Answer given by High Representative/Vice-President Mogherini on behalf of the Commission
Question reference: E-008553/2014

The European Union is aware of the ongoing detention of Ibrahim Halawa and other young people in Egypt while monitoring the worrying human rights situation in the country. The EU at all levels, including the EU Special Representative for Human Rights, Stavros Lambrinidis, has raised his case — and others — with the Egyptian authorities and is in contact with the Halawa family.

The EU Delegation in Cairo is also in regular exchange with the Irish Embassy which is competent in consular matters, and is involved in monitoring Ibrahim Halawa's court case.

The Universal Periodic Review is a State to State mechanism, and the EU therefore does not take the floor during the sessions of the UPR Working group. The UPR of Egypt took place on 5 November.
