Subject:  VP/HR — Case of Ghoncheh Ghavami in Iran
 Answer in writing

On 2 November 2014, the Iranian courts found British-Iranian woman Ghoncheh Ghavami guilty of ‘spreading propaganda against the system’ after she tried to attend a men’s volleyball match in Iran in protest at the country’s laws banning women from some men’s sporting events. She has been handed a one-year jail sentence by a Tehran court, but the judge has yet to confirm her sentence, according to reports. ‘Spreading propaganda against the system’ is not an internationally recognised criminal offence. Ghoncheh Ghavami, who spent at least 41 days of her detention before trial in solitary confinement, is currently on hunger strike in protest.

1. Is the VP/HR aware of this case? If so, what is her assessment of it, considering that Ms Ghavami is both a British and an Iranian national (although dual nationality is not recognised in Iran)?

2. Have the VP/HR and/or the EEAS raised the issue of human rights and the imprisonment of Ghoncheh Ghavami? If so, how do they intend to move forward to push for her immediate and unconditional release?

3. What concrete actions is the VP/HR taking to improve the human rights situation in Iran, as discussed and recommended in Parliament’s resolution of 3 April 2014 on the EU strategy towards Iran(1)?
