On 23 September last, the Working Group on Arbitrary Detentions of the UN Human Rights Commission, of which Venezuela is a member, issued an opinion in which it recommended the ‘immediate release’ of the Venezuelan opposition leader, Leopoldo López, given that he was arbitrarily detained by the authorities on 18 February 2014 and has been held without trial in a military prison for over 9 months.

Subsequently, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, exhorted the Venezuelan authorities to act in accordance with this opinion and to release Mr López immediately. He also urged them to guarantee a judicial process in accordance with international standards.

Is the VP/HR familiar with this case?

Is she considering taking steps to ask the State of Venezuela and its Government to comply with the resolutions issued by international human rights organisations and consequently to release Leopoldo López?
