E-000147/2015(ASW)
Answer given by Ms Malmström on behalf of the Commission
Question reference: E-000147/2015

1. The position of the EU is that contacts with the Customs Union — the Eurasian Economic Union since 1 January 2015 — are maintained at technical level.

2. The Eastern Partnership is a joint initiative of the EU and six partner countries in the East of which Belarus and Armenia are also EEU members. Regarding the Ukraine crisis, it is a political issue that first and foremost requires a political solution. The Commission has stated its conditional readiness to analyse further the possible interactions between the EEU and the EU.

3. The Commission has monitored the bilateral trade exchanges with the members of the Customs Union. Since the establishment of the Customs Union, in 2010, EU trade exchanges with its three member countries have remained relatively stable with some decrease in the case of Russia since 2013:

for Belarus, bilateral trade has remained stable over the past four years at around EUR 12 billion annually;
for Kazakhstan bilateral trade has increased over the past decade and has remained stable over the past four years at around EUR 31 billion annually;
for Russia bilateral trade had been growing reaching record levels in 2012 (EUR 338 billion); in 2013 however trade started to decrease (EUR 326 billion).
