Question for written answer E-001628-15
to the Commission
Rule 130
Gabriel Mato (PPE)

Subject:  Checking of gas emissions from vehicles
 Answer in writing

The (EU) aims to introduce stricter limits on pollutant emissions from light road vehicles, particularly for emissions of nitrogen particulates and oxides.

Several sources have noted that in the EU means of transport are responsible for up to 25% of carbon dioxide emissions, 87% of carbon monoxide emissions and 66% of nitrogen oxide emissions.

The EU has adopted a series of measures in an attempt to curb this problem, but stricter measures and much more rigorous checks are needed to ensure that the automotive sector is complying with the limits and, consequently, eradicate the pollution that occasionally plagues our cities.

What action is the Commission taking to ensure that the automotive sector is complying with the limits set?

What tests and checks have been carried out on diesel vehicles?

What provisions are being put in place to penalise manufacturers who fail to adhere to the rules?
